What to Do When Your Furniture Arrives with Missing Hardware

You open the box, lay out all the panels, and start sorting hardware — then realize something’s missing. A bag of screws, a cam lock, a dowel. It happens more than manufacturers would like to admit. Here’s exactly what to do so you’re not stuck waiting weeks for a replacement part.

Step 1: Do a Full Inventory Before Panicking

Before assuming something is missing, do a thorough check. Hardware is often packed in multiple bags inside the box, tucked under panels, or taped to the back of large pieces. Check every layer of packaging before concluding a part is absent.

Cross-reference what you find against the parts list in the instruction manual — most manufacturers include a numbered diagram of every bolt, screw, and fitting. Lay everything out by type and count as you go.

Step 2: Contact the Manufacturer Directly

Most major furniture brands have a replacement parts process that’s faster than you’d expect:

• IKEA — Visit any IKEA store with your receipt and they’ll provide missing hardware on the spot. You can also call or use their online parts request form.
• Wayfair / Amazon / Target — Contact customer service and provide your order number. Most will ship replacement parts or issue a partial refund within a few days.
• Ashley Furniture / Bob’s / Rooms To Go — Call the retailer directly. If the item was delivered, the delivery team may be able to return with the missing piece.
• Big box brands (Walmart, Costco) — Customer service can ship parts or process a return/exchange if parts aren’t available separately.

Have your order number, the item name or SKU, and the part number from the instruction manual ready when you call. This speeds things up significantly.

Step 3: Check a Hardware Store as a Shortcut

If you need the furniture assembled today and can’t wait for shipping, many standard furniture bolts and screws can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Bring the instruction manual or a photo of the missing part so you can match the size and thread type.

This works well for generic hardware like wood screws or hex bolts. Proprietary cam locks or branded fittings are harder to match and usually require going through the manufacturer.

Step 4: Don’t Force Assembly Without the Right Parts

It’s tempting to improvise — using a close-enough screw or skipping a dowel to “see if it holds.” Don’t. Furniture built with incorrect or missing hardware is unstable and can fail under normal use. This is especially important for beds, bookshelves, and anything wall-mounted.

If parts are on the way, wait. The extra day is worth it.
